The project

The University of Sheffield wished to extend its Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). ISG built an extension to the existing Factory of the Future building to provide capacity for an expanded Composite Centre.

The single-storey steel frame building features a general workshop and a controlled environment with a high-specification clean room accessed via air locks. The new structure incorporates an internal gantry crane to provide a heavy lift capability. ISG also extended the district heating main, which serves the neighbouring building, to the existing and new facility.

Sustainability

The new extension achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating and a major contributing factor to this was that service connections were made to local sustainable infrastructure, which included wind turbines and ground source heat pumps. 100% of all site waste was recycled. ISG also achieved the target of 20% of the total value of materials being derived from recycled and reused content.

The added value

ISG responded quickly to changes throughout the scheme, delivering all additional works within the limited time period to allow the client to move into the building as planned.

Works were carried out in a live environment with no disruption to the operation of the existing facility. ISG built strong working relationships and held regular meetings to coordinate activities effectively.

ISG also built a relationship with the local school and the Site Manager gave a talk on construction. A number of site visits for the staff and pupils were organised and spare building materials were donated to the Design Technology department including timber and plywood.
