Introduction
This project saw ISG build a new swimming pool extension to the town’s existing Abbey Stadium Sports Centre.
The steel frame extension houses a 25m, six lane pool with tiered seating for 300 spectators, as well as a smaller training pool and high specification changing village. ISG also renovated and modernised the existing sports centre, creating a new entrance and reception area, modern dry side changing facilities and a new state-of-the-art gym and dance studio.
The outdoor 400m synthetic eight lane athletics track was refurbished and additional car parking created. The project was carried out whilst the facility remained fully operational.
Added Value
Demolition material from another ISG project was utilised for the landscaping element of this scheme. This demonstrates how careful planning can limit the volume of waste ending up in landfill, providing both environmental and cost savings.
The scheme utilises a heat exchange system from the neighbouring crematorium. Heat generated by the furnaces is used to heat the swimming pool. This system has delivered significant ongoing financial savings for the Sports Centre, as well as addressing the crematorium's emission targets.
