The awards organised by Constructing Excellence in the North West, will see winners announced on 5 July at an event in Manchester. With finalists going forward to the National Constructing Excellence Awards in London in November.
Judges recognised our projects at St Anne Street Police Station, Liverpool; Velodrome, National Cycling Centre, Manchester; NatWest's One Spinningfields Square, Manchester; and North West Construction Hub (NWCH) led social value initiative at HMP Styal.

Regeneration and Retrofit Award - St Anne Street Police Station
Organisations involved: Merseyside Police, Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), ISG, Mace, Ellis Williams Architects, Mott MacDonald, and Stephen Hunt Associates
ISG’s deep refurbishment of St Anne Street Police Station for Merseyside Police created a modern, brighter, and more energy-efficient building, with running costs expected to be reduced by at least 18%.
St Anne Street first opened in 1972 and has gone on to become Merseyside Police’s busiest operational station. Work to completely refurbish the station, including adding a new floor, began in April 2021. Now transformed, the five-storey station boasts open-plan working spaces and modern AV equipment within each meeting room. It will house 450 officers and staff.
Adjacent to Merseyside Police’s state-of-the-art new headquarters Rose Hill, St Anne Street now boasts a similar façade, helping to create a ‘campus’ feel across the site. With a modern new insulated cladding system, LED lighting throughout, electric car charging points and solar panels, the transformation has improved the building’s energy efficiency while reducing carbon emissions, helping to support Merseyside Police’s drive to be the most sustainable force in the country.
The project was procured through the North West Construction Hub (NWCH) framework.
Regeneration and Retrofit Award - Velodrome, National Cycling Centre, Manchester

Our refurbishment and modernisation of the National Cycling Centre in Manchester achieved significant carbon reductions in line with Manchester’s 2038 zero carbon vision, with the velodrome estimated to save somewhere in the region of 517 tonnes CO2 per year.
The project involved identifying fabric efficiency improvements, improvements in air permeability through thermographic testing, the replacement of gas boilers with electric Air Source Heat Pumps, and installing LED lighting systems. Flexible ventilation, heating, and building services also allow for future zero carbon technology uptake.
The circa £25m project was delivered in partnership with Manchester City Council, MCRActive, operator GLL, British Cycling and a range of other stakeholders, via the North West Construction Hub framework.

One Spinningfields Square is a vibrant hub for NatWest Group in the heart of Deansgate, providing its people with a transformative and unique workspace. The extensive refurbishment project created an inclusive environment that prioritises employee wellbeing, through brand-new wellness facilities, an external roof terrace, a multi faith room, and designated quiet and tech free zones on office floors.
The space celebrates Manchester’s rich industrial heritage featuring subtle references to the iconic worker bee alongside artwork by local creators.

The HM Prison Styal Employability Programme was led by the NWCH ‘Social Value’ SIG. The initiative, supported by ISG, helps to break down the barriers for female prisoners gaining access to construction-related qualifications and future employment in the industry.
