ISG scores top CCS grades at Imperial College London

ISG has achieved an impressive Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) score for its Biomedical Engineering Research Hub at Imperial College London’s White City campus.

The CCS recognises the highest performing sites with excellent standards of consideration towards their neighbours, workforce and the environment.

Finishing comfortably above the industry average of 36, with an impressive 45 out of 50, the score is the joint second highest in ISG's history, and the highest ever for its Engineering Services team.

The project was described as "embracing all company values including 'dream smart', 'speak frankly', 'always care' and 'never stop learning'", and the visit as "one of the most impressive and enjoyable visits among the 920+ carried out."

Due to the high profile and highly technical nature of the project, the team was praised for addressing relationships in the local community and making the health, safety and well-being of its workforce a priority.

Engagement with local schoolchildren was instrumental in the project’s success, with the assessor noting that the project team fully embraced the importance of the next generation.

ISG also received positive feedback from a local school, which praised the mutually beneficial relationship with the team following its participation in Open Doors 2018.

The project team was praised for its best practice adoption of Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag (GGBS) as an alternative to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). 

This innovative technique is a by-product of blast-furnaced iron ore, coke and limestone, and offers much better physical and sustainable properties.

ISG project director, Neil O'Riordan, said: "The score is testament to our commitment to improve the image of construction. 

“At ISG, we always care and believe that the legacy of a project should thrive from when a project starts and after it finishes.”

He continued: “We are delighted to achieve a fantastic score of 45 – which we hope to increase in our next assessment."

ISG’s head of sustainability, Peter Kelly, added: "This recognition is another example of ISG's commitment to reduce carbon emissions across all of its construction sites. 

“The team at Imperial College has embodied our core value of 'dream smart' and our sustainable business strategy by introducing some innovative sustainable measures that can be used on our other construction projects going forward."
