ISG completes work on the transformative Cardiff Bus Interchange project
ISG recently completed the fit out of the Cardiff Bus Interchange project for Transport for Wales. Procured through the SEWSCAP framework, the project involved transforming the shell and core of the interchange into a world-leading Bus Interchange, which will provide a vital link between rail and bus travel across Cardiff.
Situated adjacent to Cardiff Central Station, the Cardiff Bus Interchange represents the final milestone in the development of Central Square.
The original bus station, constructed in the 1950’s was demolished in 2017, in preparation for the newly improved bus interchange works to commence. The new transport hub comprises of 500,000 sq ft of new space, including 14 bus stands, four retail units, public toilets and information screens for commuters. Key features of the project include exceptional granite flooring, acoustic rafts and red cladding in the concourse area of the station. Further additions include an office room in the mezzanine, and a welfare area for drivers.
The completed project now represents a landmark transport hub for residents of Cardiff, equipped with impressive facilities for both the local community and Transport for Wales workers. ISG recently completed additional works for the development of Central Square, which involved the creation of 318 new build to rent apartments for the Private Rented Sector, 154,000 sq ft of office space across ten levels, 231 parking spaces, and associated public realm works with biodiversity rain gardens.

Social value was a crucial aspect to delivery of the Interchange bus station, providing upskilling opportunities for the local community. Our project team developed a strong relationship with Cardiff and Vale College, on Dumballs Road, near the city centre. In our partnership with the local college, we led immersive site visits with students from the college, introducing them to various construction processes, and day to day life working on site. As many of the students from the local college had previously enrolled on construction-oriented courses, this proved to be a great opportunity to put theory into practice on site.
