Around 50 students studying quantity surveying, architectural technology, interior design and the built environment headed down to the site in Glenrothes, Fife in Scotland across two days at the end of September, putting their studies into practice by learning about the project and how ISG is delivering a first-class office space for roof window manufacturer VELUX.
They were given details on the glulam-frames extension, had a tour of the site and learnt about how the project’s design choices are creating a lasting legacy for the staff who will eventually use the space and those who live nearby.
Project manager Sam Small said: “We were delighted to welcome so many students from Fife College to site, helping shape construction experts of the future. We take our commitment to communities around our projects very seriously and work hard to involve people in the different stages of the project – this is a great example of how we encourage young people to consider a career in construction and pass on our knowledge.”
Martina Brady, Quantity Surveying Lecturer at Fife College arranged the visit for the students. Martina said: “Site visits, such as the one to Velux’s upgraded headquarters, are an excellent opportunity for our students to contextualise what they are learning at College.”
ISG started work on the £7 million expansion to the UK & Ireland head office building of VELUX in Fife, Scotland in September 2018, with completion scheduled for spring 2020.
The 37,673 sq ft two-storey, new build structure will house a new customer service centre, training facilities, meeting suites, office space and a staff restaurant.
Designed to complement the gently sloping site, the glulam-framed extension features a curved roof, full-height glassing, stone and timber cladding, and will showcase the latest VELUX technology, including its Modular Skylight System, alongside VELUX flat roof windows and sun tunnels.
The extension joins the existing building via a new staff entrance, which features a green roof, aluminium guttering and timber rain screen cladding.
