Construction News lauds ISG’s modern approach to delivering six schools in 12 months

ISG’s use of modern methods of construction to deliver a remarkable six Manchester schools since the start of 2018 has featured in a bumper Construction News feature. 

The article profiles the innovative modular construction approach utilised by ISG’s Construction North team to ensure swift delivery of the new facilities, which formed part of a package of 10 schemes awarded to ISG via the North West Construction Hub (NWCH) under the £35 million Education Basic Needs (EBN) framework, as well as its efficient use of BIM data post-completion.

With such a short timeframe with which to complete the schools, the use of modern construction techniques was essential to a successful delivery, says ISG’s framework director, Neil Walker.

“We knew that the solution would be to use modern methods of construction,” he said.

“The schools were designed for manufacture [with] the decision fundamentally programme-driven. 

“Traditional build techniques would have taken far too long, so offsite had to be the way forward.”

The scheme has also seen the rollout of ISG’s innovative smart forms system, which promotes efficiency by linking asset forms permanently to BIM datasets.

The forms allow facilities management teams to keep the dataset up-to-date and relevant by completing them when any change is implemented, a feature which unleashes the power of BIM once the building has been handed over.

Jane Shaw, ISG’s senior design manager, commented: “This is a Manchester City Council pilot scheme for BIM Level 2 and the post occupancy asset information model we have developed. 
“We think it will be really beneficial.”
