Introduction
ISG has completed the refurbishment of The Grafton in Cambridge. The Grafton was a multiphase project located in the heart of Cambridge and has been a major shopping destination in the area for over 30 years.
The shopping centre underwent a multi-million-pound makeover, with ISG helping to redevelop the space. The Grafton was transformed into a 21st-century retail and leisure destination with a contemporary roof, new stores and restaurants.
The project
We worked with the developer to make sure the space aligned with current occupier requirements, housing brands such as H&M, Amelie and Decathlon.
Utilising its strong retail sector knowledge and experience working on live sites, the ISG team worked with centre management and existing retailers to develop methods in line with the logistical restrictions, while maintaining the overall programme.
As the project was in a live environment, client liaison was key to its success. We developed strong working relationships with the tenants to anticipate their requirements and minimise our impact on their trading. The project also had phased handovers which required clear planning and impact assessments.
The project started in 2016 and involved replacing the roof with a modern glazed system. Public mall areas were reconfigured and refurbished to an exceptional standard, despite having several technical complexities.
The project was a top down build using a temporary roof scaffold. The new glazed atrium gives the space a refreshed feel.
