Introduction

A strategic framework with Alliance Leisure Services commenced in July 2010 when ISG was contracted to deliver the first of three phases of work, with a total value of £4 million, at Deeside Leisure Centre in Queensferry.

The first phase saw the construction of six external artificial five-a-side football pitches.

During the second phase ISG created a fitness suite and spa facility and converted a redundant nightclub on the first floor of the leisure centre to form two fitness studios and 80-station fitness suite.

The third and final phase of works involved the conversion of the existing arena into a dedicated ‘extreme’ facility containing high ropes, climbing wall plus a BMX and skateboard park. The latter features one of the largest skate bowls in the UK.

The Added Value

The pitches were delivered one week ahead of schedule. The artificial turf from the old pitches was removed and is now being used as recycled turf surfacing at a golf range.

The spa was originally designed to occupy a different area of the leisure centre, however following a calculated projection of likely usage and design team discussion it was decided to relocate it to the old nightclub kitchen area. This not only increased the size of the spa, it also gave enlarged the scope for innovative finishing and design.

Electrical demand has been reduced by approx 20% across the project. The improved efficiency will greatly assist the leisure centre’s long term future.
