Overview
An established and successful relationship with the client led to ISG being selected for this design and build project. Working from a specific model, the highly sustainable school and multi-purpose centre are the benchmark for the new community development![](https://www.isgltd.com/-/media/images/isg/components/mediasection/image/st_martins_primary_schools.jpg?h=328&w=512&hash=8F684AA6079077D38473C3BBEF9185B1&usecustomfunctions=1¢ercrop=1 )
The Project
The primary school is a single storey steel-framed structure, featuring a brickwork and render façade, aluminium frame windows and a standing seam metal roof. The building comprises 14 classrooms, a school hall and a nursery, all of which are naturally ventilated.Generous amounts of glazing and raked ceilings give a feeling of spaciousness and provide high levels of natural light. The project included significant landscaping to create playground and car parking areas along with new pathways and retaining works to protect and enhance an existing copse and pond at the site.
ISG also constructed the new multi-purpose community centre adjacent to the school. The majority of the structure is of a single-storey design, with two-storey office accommodation and a large sports hall. It mirrors the architectural finishes of the school and has been designed to offer flexible accommodation to suit a variety of needs.
The added value
ISG’s experience with similar schemes helped develop an established model for the design of the school. Involvement in the design stages, experience and a flexible approach enabled collaboration with the client to provide a building that would directly cater for the needs of end users.
As the first buildings for the area, the school and multi-purpose centre set a high standard for the new community development. To mark this, future pupils of the school were invited to the site to see the project in progress. A safe viewing area was prepared for over 60 guests, including parents, teachers, funders, local councillors and members of the clergy, all keen to get their first glimpse of the new school.
The visit gave the children the chance to imagine life in the new building, which features innovative learning spaces, while also gaining insight into the construction industry and how a building takes shape.
The scheme is a sustainable development, for which all heating and hot water is supplied via a district heating system. The school has been constructed to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating, while the community centre is BREEAM Excellent.
