Legal and General Opens New Welsh HQ
Legal & General, marks a pivotal moment in its £1 billion Cardiff investment by inaugurating its new Welsh headquarters. The state-of-the-art 120,000 sq ft office space, known as Calon, Welsh for 'heart', situated within the Interchange development in Cardiff Central Square, signifies the pinnacle of Legal & General's £450 million regeneration initiative for the area.
This innovative development has played a key role in transforming Cardiff into one of the fastest-growing employment hubs in the UK. Upon its completion, the Central Square project is anticipated to generate employment opportunities for up to 13,000 individuals.
Construction of Calon commenced in December 2019, signalling the beginning of Legal & General's expansion in Wales. The company has bolstered its Welsh workforce by an impressive 32%, growing from 1,900 to 2,500 employees, establishing itself as one of Cardiff's prominent private employers.
As Legal & General's fit-out partner, ISG has led the design of the office space, aligning with the highest standards of sustainable architecture. The structure, devoid of gas usage, operates through self-generated electricity from solar panels and harnesses air source heat pumps for its energy needs. Calon has now achieved the prestigious BREEAM Outstanding rating and aims to attain the Nabers UK 5-star certification, aligning with its Net Zero operational objectives.
Moreover, Calon aspires for a coveted WELL Platinum rating, epitomizing a design cantered on occupant wellbeing. Boasting over 3,000 live plants and a harmonious infusion of natural lighting, the office is meticulously crafted to prioritize the health and wellness of its occupants.
Legal & General's investment extends beyond its workforce, demonstrating a commitment to benefiting the local community. The fit-out phase alone contributed over £11 million to suppliers in the Cardiff area. Additionally, Legal & General, along with its supply chain partners, has supported the community by offering over 516 weeks of apprenticeships, 18 weeks of work experience, and 332 hours of career support sessions in Cardiff throughout the construction phase.
The Calon project signifies Legal & General's unwavering dedication to sustainability, innovation, and community engagement, fortifying Cardiff's position as a thriving economic centre.
"The pivotal role both Legal & General and Rightacres have played in the transformation of Central Square - the gateway into the city of Cardiff, cannot be underestimated.
